Process optimisation: ready-to-connect energy chains for high-volume production

Application:
5-axis processing machine with a structure in which three linear axes are fed simultaneously.

When using energy chains on machine tools, the cables and hoses are generally only attached to the system after the energy chain has been installed. When installed, the energy chains are difficult to reach, as if they were lying on a table. This posed a certain safety risk for the fitters, as there was a risk of falling in some places. A fall protection system, such as a 3-point harness, would have to be provided. There are also problems such as buckling or damage to the cable, which could be caused by the complex assembly on site. It is always recommended to insert the cable and hose beforehand.

To minimise hazards and risks, the customer opted for readychain® systems from igus®, pre-assembled, ready-to-connect energy chains. This enabled the fitters to significantly optimise the previous sequential assembly of individual parts. Many of the process steps involved in the subsequent harnessing of the energy chain, such as securing or a splitting concept for the cable, could be saved. Another important aspect of the solution is the significant reduction in the number of complaints that were made in the past due to damage. In addition, the introduction of special serial numbers for the readychain® systems has increased the quality and efficiency of the entire series production. The customer also uses a QR code for this purpose, which provides direct information about the installed system.
