Automated border control at airports

• What was needed: Reliable linear axis for vertical movement.
• Requirements: The application requires components that are precise and enable smooth movement. In addition, the axes should operate quietly and reliably over long periods of use and be maintenance-free.

To overcome the challenges in the airport environment, the system had to solve various problems. These included creating optimal lighting conditions for facial recognition using an integrated LED lighting system and brightness sensor.

Another problem was to ensure the positioning of monitors, 10" / 2D and 3D cameras, precisely at the passengers' eye level. This is made more difficult by the different heights of the passengers. The system must be able to compensate for this in a matter of seconds. In addition, spoofing (deceptive methods to steal identity) must be prevented.

The solution was to use igus® products to ensure reliable facial recognition regardless of changing lighting conditions and varying body sizes.

An integrated LED lighting system with a brightness sensor is used to ensure optimal lighting conditions for the correct recognition of facial features. In addition, a system has been developed that enables the movement of the monitor 10" /2D and 3D cameras to be positioned quickly and precisely at the passengers' eye level using igus® products. The devices move on a vertical axis and always position themselves at the passenger's eye level. At the same time, an anti-spoofing camera system was developed to prevent identity theft.

The high-quality igus® products help to ensure that the system reliably recognises faces regardless of the different lighting conditions and body sizes of the passengers. The automated check also saves time and manpower.
